CGN Trait information
blotchy ripening (or Gray Wall)
Trait category:
Fruit disorders
Fruit disorders
Trait information:
A grey discolouration of the tomato flesh, which won't ripen. It appears more frequently on older cultivars. It is associated with environmental conditions (low temperature, low light intensity, high N and low K levels) causing poor fertilization. Affected green fruit has grayish brown blotches on the shoulders; internal wall tissue is brownish. As fruit ripens, discolored blotches are yellowish. It should not be confused with Internal Browning induced by TMV, and uneven ripening (that will still ripen properly).
